Any tooth which does not erupt in the mouth due to lack of space is called an impacted tooth. Oral complications such as infections, crowding, or diseased tissue may develop if teeth don't emerge from the gums as they should. These complications can be prevented or effectively managed with a timely tooth extraction.

Third molars — commonly known as wisdom teeth — are the most frequently extracted teeth because the majority of individuals don't have jaws large enough to accommodate them. Impacted wisdom teeth that don't grow properly can result in swelling, infections, crowding, and shifting of other teeth.
This is a minor surgical procedure undertaken only after proper planning and examination, including radiographs of the jaw bones. Depending on the position of the wisdom molars, one or all four wisdom teeth may be advised for removal.

When the jawbone lacks adequate volume or density to support dental implants — or to correct defects caused by gum disease, tooth loss, or trauma — our surgeon performs a bone graft. Post-Operative Aftercare
Following your surgeon's instructions is the single most important factor in a smooth, complication-free recovery.
Apply an ice pack to your cheek in 20-minute intervals for the first 24 hours to reduce swelling and discomfort.
Stick to soft, cool, non-irritating foods — yoghurt, mashed potatoes, soups. Avoid hard, crunchy, or very hot foods.
Avoid smoking for at least 48–72 hours. Smoking dramatically increases the risk of dry socket and delayed healing.
Take all prescribed antibiotics and pain relievers as instructed — even if you feel well. Complete the full course.
After 24 hours, rinse gently with warm salt water after meals. Avoid vigorous brushing near the surgical site.
Return for all scheduled check-up appointments so your surgeon can confirm proper healing and remove any sutures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Modern local anaesthesia ensures the procedure itself is pain-free. Some soreness and swelling are expected after the anaesthesia wears off, but prescribed pain relief manages this effectively. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the experience is.
Simple extractions typically heal within 3–5 days. Wisdom tooth removal or bone grafting may require 5–10 days before normal eating and activity resumes. Complex jaw surgery may need several weeks. Your surgeon will give you a personalised recovery timeline.
If your wisdom teeth are causing pain, swelling, infection, crowding of other teeth, or are identified as impacted on an X-ray — extraction is strongly advised. Early removal (late teens to early 20s) tends to result in simpler procedures and faster healing.
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot at the extraction site is dislodged before the wound heals. To prevent it: avoid smoking, do not suck through straws, do not spit forcefully, and follow all aftercare instructions provided by your surgeon.
Not always. Bone grafting is only required if the jawbone is too thin, too short, or lacks adequate density to support an implant. Your dentist will assess this using X-rays or a CBCT scan at your consultation.
Most oral surgical procedures are performed under local anaesthesia — you are awake but completely numb. For complex or anxiety-inducing procedures, conscious sedation may be offered. General anaesthesia is reserved for hospital-based cases.
